Course content
|
The goal of the lectures given by visiting faculty is to provide students with insight into selected historical and contemporary works, primarily from Austrian and other German-language literature and culture. Example: Der Ackermann aus Böhmen und Tkadleček (Das Weberlein) Literaturseminar/ Workshop (Olmütz-Oldenburg) It is hard to find a period in which people were confronted with death more frequently than in the Middle Ages. Epidemics, wars, and appalling sanitary conditions meant that the average life expectancy was approximately 30 years. "The Plowman" by Jan of Teplá (circa 1400) is a fascinating polemic in which Death, personified, must justify his cruelty. He is accused of causing the loss of a beloved woman. In a dynamic dialogue, Death presents himself not only as a vehement defender of his mission but also as an outstanding expert on the medieval worldview, instructing Ackermannand, by extension, the reader. The Old Czech text "Tkadleček" will be discussed in the seminar because it exhibits striking points of contact. The seminar is designed as a "block session" (on Friday). A joint workshop with the University of Oldenburg is planned.

Learning outcomes
|
The goal of the lectures given by visiting professors is to provide students with insight into selected historical and contemporary works, primarily from Austrian and other German-language literature and culture.
Students will gain an overview of selected historical and contemporary forms of Austrian and other German-language literature and culture. They will be able to place the topics covered in a broader historical and cultural context, critically reflect on their significance, and discuss them in an academic setting.

Prerequisites
|
The course is intended for students enrolled in German Studies programmes as well as for other interested students at Palacký University. German language proficiency at approximately B2 level is expected for work with selected primary and secondary texts.

Regular and active participation in the block seminar.
