Course content
|
The bourgeois tragedy has been one of the most influential genres in modern literature since the mid-18th century. It is the archetype of the family drama. Family problems take the place of the public affairs found in classical tragedy. In particular, the father-daughter relationship becomes vulnerable to external and internal conflicts when the daughter is about to leave the family home. The bourgeois tragedy revolves entirely around the daughter standing at the threshold between her family of origin and the family she is about to start of her own. The dangers along this path are manifold: seducers, rivals, but also the mother and father themselves can stall the daughter's transformation into a wife and ultimately bring it to a violent halt. The story always ends with the young woman's death by murder or suicide. - The course covers, in historical order, the four canonical bourgeois tragedies of German-language literature: Lessing's *Miss Sara Sampson* and *Emilia Galotti*, Schiller's *Intrigue and Love*, and Hebbel's *Maria Magdalene/a*. All plays must be read in their entirety. The most important scenes will be discussed together

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the seminar is to introduce the genre of "bourgeois drama," which was characteristic of German literature in the second half of the 18th century. As part of the seminar, students will also deepen their skills in analyzing dramatic texts and gain an overview of the development of German literature during the Enlightenment and the Sturm und Drang era.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of German at least at the B1 level; prior completion of the Introduction to Literary Studies course (KGN/1ULT) is recommended.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Dialog
Active participation in class, no more than two unexcused absences, and a final discussion of the texts covered in the seminar
