Course content
|
The aim of the seminar is to familiarise students with the most important trends, themes and works of German-language interwar literature, based on selected texts. Particular emphasis is placed on the literature of the Weimar Republic. Students will gain a basic overview of both the individual literary movements and groups (late Expressionism, Dada, New Objectivity) and the key issues of the period addressed by these movements and groups (the First World War, modernisation in the 1920s, emancipation, mass culture, life in the big city, film as a new medium, etc.). Thematic areas: History and culture of the interwar period The historical avant-garde - late Expressionism, Dada The manifesto as a typical avant-garde genre Literary responses to the First World War New Objectivity - aesthetics and anthropology Theatre of the Weimar Republic, Bertolt Brecht Exile literature - political texts Exile literature - the historical novel Internal emigration Radio plays of the interwar period Film of the interwar period

Prerequisites
|
Knowledge of German at a minimum of B1 level; it is recommended that students have previously completed the 'Introduction to Literary Studies' course.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Dialog
Active participation in lessons, a maximum of two unexcused absences, and a final discussion of the texts covered in the seminar
