Course content
|
German-language literature in Prague ranks among the most significant phenomena of European modernism. Between the mid-19th century and the expulsion or murder of the German-speaking Jewish population during the Nazi era, a unique literary culture emerged in Prague, characterised by multilingualism, cultural diversity and political upheaval. This seminar examines the development of German literature in Prague from its beginnings to its lasting impact, and introduces key authors and current approaches to research. Topics: 1. Introduction - What is 'Prague German literature'? 2. Context 1 - The Habsburg Monarchy; German, Czech and Jewish culture; multilingualism 3. Context 2 - National movements; urbanisation; cultural transfer 4. The beginnings of Prague German literature 5. Rainer Maria Rilke and Prague 6. Franz Kafka 7. Paul Leppin and Prague 'décadence' 8. Egon Erwin Kisch and literary reportage 9. Leo Perutz 10. German literature in Prague after 1938 11. The end of German-language culture in Prague 12. Learning outcomes
|
Upon successful completion of the seminar, students will be able to explain the historical background of German literature in Prague; analyse Prague's cultural multilingualism from a literary perspective; analyse key works of German literature in Prague; critically discuss different research perspectives; place the literature within its cultural-historical context.
Students will learn about the historical context of the origins and development of Prague German literature, with particular emphasis on its multicultural character and the analysis of specific works.

Prerequisites
|
A knowledge of German at a minimum of B1 level; it is recommended that students have previously completed the course 'Introduction to Literary Studies' (KGN/1ULT).

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance, Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Dialog
Active participation in the seminar, a maximum of two unexcused absences, and a final discussion of the texts covered in the seminar
