Learning outcomes
Texte des Realismus: Zur Kritik der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft The 19th century is considered the century of the bourgeoisie. The previously ruling nobility and clergy (church) lost importance following the French Revolution, while the economic importance of the bourgeoisie - supported by enormous advances in the fields of science and technology - was steadily growing and in the end, also led to political power. It, furthermore, entailed a differentiation of bourgeois society with various power and ruling structures, which were precisely described and also criticized by the literature of realism from the middle of the 19th century. In this seminar, the social relations of power and individual problems of the bourgeoisie will be examined using literary texts from the period between 1843 and 1892.
