Course content
The literature seminars - like the literature lectures - focus either on individual time periods/epochs in German literature, or they may be defined as an overview of the works by a single writer, several related writers, or as a developmental exploration of a specific genre, one or several motifs and themes, or types of figures of speech etc. However, the seminars - unlike lectures - emphasize mainly practical work with primary and reference texts and students' creative work. The current list of offered seminars including the list of reference literature and study materials is published at the beginning of each term in the syllabi of the German Department. Some of the seminars have the form of "workshops", i.e. without a specified educational horizon, canon of texts and course structure, which is defined "in the process" during students' discussions with the course tutor. Examples of the topics of individual seminars: - Theory of the novel in practice: polyphony, dialogism, intertextuality - Kunstmaerchen - Legend as a genre; modern legends - Grotesque: ugliness as an aesthetic category - Letters, essays: "other literary means" - Romanticism and Jews - Heinrich von Kleist - Prague German literature texts - Generation problems in literature after 1945 - Modern German lyrics: song lyrics - Greek mythology as a source of motifs and themes in German literature - Old and New Testament as a source of motifs and themes in German literature Examples of courses that have been presented as "workshops": - contemporary German and Austrian literature, "Neuerscheinungen": discussions on contemporary literature and its reviews - experiment of Central Europe: searching, archiving and commenting texts (of Czech as well as German origin) concerning the topic of Mitteleuropa - manuscripts in archives of Moravian libraries: reading and interpretation - texts of Moravian German literature for Czech Radio Olomouc broadcasting, exhibition "Rambles around German literary Olomouc" etc.

A special emphasis is laid on the knowledge of the historical and cultural-historical context. The resulting competence also consists in an independent interpretation of a literary text and its examination in the literary historical as well as general historical, aesthetical, sociological context and in a comparative relation to the literature of the student's mother tongue/or the second subject.
