The lecture is devoted to the era of German Romanticism, placing the literature of this period within broader social, political and philosophical contexts. The individual phases of Romanticism, with their respective centres and key figures, will be presented, and their aesthetic 'programmes' will be examined. The individual literary genres and Romanticism's tendency to experiment with them will also be systematically explored. Syllabus: 1. Political and social context - the French Revolution, Prussian reforms, nationalism, the Wars of Liberation, the Restoration 2. The concept of 'Romanticism'; the unity of Romanticism 3. Early Romanticism 4. High and Late Romanticism 5. Romantic philosophy and science - philosophy of nature; language; history; psychology 6. Poetics - Autonomy, universal poetry; new mythology 7. Prose - Bildungsroman and artist's novel; historical novel 8. Prose 2 - Short stories and novellas; artistic fairy tales 9. Drama 10. Poetry 11. Romanticism in Bohemia and Moravia 12. Reception of Romanticism

The aim of the lecture is to introduce the German Romantic period, placing the literature of this period within a broader social, political and philosophical context. The various phases of Romanticism will be presented, along with their respective centres and most significant figures, and their aesthetic 'programmes' will be discussed. Students will also be introduced to the most important genres and works of this era.
Students will gain an overview of the history and poetics of Romanticism, as well as its key genres and works. The lecture course concludes with an oral examination. |
