Course content
German is a language rich in particles. These "little words" appear in various contexts and serve various functions. Particularly difficult to describeand to teachis the use of so-called "nuancing particles," as in the following examples: Olmütz liegt JA in Mähren. Er ist EBEN ein mährischer Autor. Hat er dich DENN angerufen? Gib mir MAL den Bleistift! Although intensive linguistic analysis of these words has been underway for about 60 years, there are still a number of unresolved issues. This seminar will focus on the most important findings of particle research. Particular attention will be given to German-Czech contrastive studies. The following topics are planned: 1) Particle Research in Linguistics 2) On the Classification of Particles 3) The Establishment of Modal Particles in Research 4) Analysis of Modal Particles: The Example of "ja" 5) The Teaching of Modal Particles 6) Modal particles and illocution 7) Combinations of modal particles 8) Modal particles as a translation problem 9) Modal particles and language change 10) Particles and word order 11) Intensifying particles 12) Particles in speech and conversation
