1. Personennamen: Entwicklung von Vornamen germanischer (Siegfried), lateinischer (Lorenz), griechischer (Barbara) oder hebräischer (Adam) Herkunft, Entwicklung von Familiennamen (Adolf an dem Bach Adolf Bach, der lange Kilian Kilian Lang), Motivationsvielfalt, Bedeutungskonkurrenzen, lautliche Vielfalt der Familiennamen, Spitznamen (Christian Krischen), Pseudonyme (Aurore Dudevant George Sand), Personennamen in anderen Kulturen. 2. Tiernamen: Tiernamenklassen; Zootiernamen (Cora), Haustiernamen (Rex, Lumpi), Nutz- und Zuchttiernamen (Bacardi, Monsun), Wildtiernamen (Kaiman Sammy). 3. Ortsnamen: Raumnamen (Republik Österreich), Siedlungsnamen (Bingen am Rhein), Gewässernamen (Donau), Berg- und Gebirgsnamen (Matterhorn, Erzgebirge), Straßennamen (Bäckergasse), Gebäudenamen (Haus Zur wilden Gans), Himmelskörpernamen (der Mars). 4. Objektnamen: Warennamen (Aspirin), Unternehmensnamen (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG), Institutionsnamen (Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg), Kunstwerknamen (Claude Monet: Frau mit Sonnenschirm), Verkehrsmittelnamen (Nordsee-Express). 5. Ereignisnamen (Unternehmen Barbarossa, Versailler Vertrag): Typologie. 6. Phänomennamen: Namen von Großbränden (Der große Brand von London), Sturmfluten (Luciaflut) und Überschwemmungen (Thüringer Sintflut).

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the seminar is to present onomastics as a linguistic discipline in a practical way, based on the theoretical knowledge from the lecture: in the first part of the series, students will be given practical examples to complement the theoretical information from the lecture on the functions of proper names; proper names will be introduced by examples as a special group among nouns. We will look at examples of the translatability and non-translatability of proper nouns from a foreign language into the native language, we will learn the concrete differences between appellatives and proper nouns, we will notice their morphology as well as their syntax and spelling. In the second part we will focus on the six most important groups of names, which will be characterized from several points of view.
The aim of the seminar is to deepen the students' knowledge gained during the semester in the Introduction to German Onomastics lectures. The student will be able to analyse proper nouns, which can be useful for translators of so-called speaking names when translating fiction, but also for future teachers of German.

Prerequisites

Designed for undergraduate and graduate students. No special prerequisites are required apart from knowledge of the German language (the seminar is conducted in German).

Assessment methods and criteria

Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Seminar Work
The requirements for the seminar will be communicated by the teacher at the beginning of the course. Students will prepare reports on the different types of proper nouns, and in practical exercises they will analyse individual proper nouns in the seminar and gain information on their form.
