Course content
The aim of the lecture "Semiotics" is to introduce the fundamentals of theoretical semiotics, to illustrate selected issues in descriptive and contrastive semiotics using examples (focusing primarily on the description of gestures and visual signs), and to highlight the potential of applied semiotics. Lecture outline: The Development of Semiotics in the 20th Century The Relationship between Linguistics and Semiotics Semiotic Dimensions according to Ch. W. Morris Ch. S. Peirce's Classification of Signs F. de Saussure and his Sign Model The Nature of the Linguistic Sign Verbal and Non-verbal Signs Typology of Gestures The Relationship between Text and Image The Iconicity of Language and Image Cultural Semiotics Zoosemiotics Applied Semiotics

Learning outcomes
The aim of the lecture is to introduce the fundamentals of theoretical semiotics, to illustrate selected issues in descriptive and contrastive semiotics using examples (focusing in particular on the description of gestures and visual signs), and to highlight the potential of applied semiotics.
The resulting competence consists in overview of modern semiotics.
Prerequisites
The lecture is intended for all students of the Palacký University.

The series of lectures will be completed with a written exam.
