Course content
|
The lecture "Language Culture, Language Criticism, and Language Preservation" focuses on both historical and contemporary efforts to improve German language culture. However, it also takes into account the Western tradition, as this is fundamental to developments in the German-speaking world. The lecture is primarily focused on the history of the field. A comparison of recent German and Czech publications on language preservation is planned for the conclusion. The following topics will be discussed: 1) History of Language Culture I: The Greco-Roman Tradition 2) History of Language Culture II: Rhetoric and Grammar from the 15th to the 17th Century 3) History of Language Culture III: The Efforts of GOTTSCHED and ADELUNG 4) Jacob GRIMM and Language Preservation 5) Language Preservation at the End of the 19th Century / WUSTMANN and Linguistics 6) On the History of Purism 7) Current Trends 1: The Debate Surrounding Bastian SICK 8) Current Trends 2: Feminist Linguistics 9) Criticism of Academic Language 10) A Contrasting View of Language Preservation: "Dummdeutsch" by Eckhard HENSCHEID and "Dictionary of Clichés" by Vladimír JUST

The lecture "Language Culture, Language Criticism, and Language Preservation" focuses on both historical and contemporary efforts to improve German language culture. However, it also takes into account the Western tradition, as this is fundamental to developments in the German-speaking world. The lecture is primarily focused on the history of the field. A comparison of recent German and Czech publications on language preservation is planned for the conclusion.
Graduates will systematically describe the historical development and theoretical foundations of linguistic culture in the German context, from its ancient roots and rhetorical traditions to the purist movements of the 19th century. They are familiar with the contributions of key figures (Gottsched, Adelung, Grimm, Wustmann) and are able to critically evaluate current linguistic trends, including feminist linguistics, critiques of academic language, and modern debates on language popularization. Based on the knowledge acquired, the student independently compares recent German and Czech works devoted to language preservation and analytically interprets journalistic reflections on linguistic malpractices (Henscheid, Just).

Prerequisites
|
The course is intended for students enrolled in German Studies programmes as well as for other interested students at Palacký University. Knowledge of German language at B1-B2 level is a prerequisite for completion of the course.
