Course content
|
In this lecture, phonetics will be presented as a linguistic discipline that deals with the material basis of language and is closely related to phonology as a "sister discipline." The aim of the lecture is both to summarize the history of this discipline's development and to outline the theoretical and methodological foundations of articulatory, acoustic, and auditory phonetics. The difference between descriptive, normative, and comparative phonetics will be explained, and diachronic and synchronic approaches in the field of comparative phonetics will be described. In connection with these main topics, we will also examine suprasegmental phonetics, phonotactics, and sound blending in greater detail, thereby establishing a theoretical foundation for the practical exercises in the seminar. Finally, participants will be introduced to the representation of sounds in all languages using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

The course introduces phonetics as a subdiscipline of linguistics that deals with the physical basis of language and is closely related to phonology as a "sister discipline."
Graduates define phonetics as a linguistic discipline and understand its relationship to phonology. They distinguish between articulatory, acoustic, and auditory phonetics, as well as descriptive, normative, and comparative approaches in diachronic and synchronic contexts. They are familiar with the history of the field and have a command of the principles of suprasegmental phonetics, phonotactics, and coarticulation, which they apply in practice. Finally, they are familiar with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and understand the universal representation of sounds.

Prerequisites
|
The lecture is intended for all students of the Palacký University. Knowledge of German language at B1-B2 level is a prerequisite for completion of the course.
