Course content
|
This seminar builds on the courses "Working with Text/Textarbeit" 1 and 2. In addition to analyzing the content and language of academic texts, students will also be introduced to strategies for writing scholarly texts. The seminar will guide students through the individual steps involved in producing a scholarly publication. The first part of the seminar will address the following issues: selecting and defining the scope of a topic for various types of scholarly texts, structuring thematic units, selecting secondary literature and adopting a critical approach to it, as well as citation formats and citation management. Building on the first year, the seminar will provide more detailed information on how to work with scholarly literature from online sources. The second part of the seminar will focus on the following more comprehensive topics: argumentation techniques, methods for formulating and defending a thesis, and interdisciplinary scholarly discourse.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand argumentative texts on topics in the humanities and identify their main ideas, argumentative structure, and semantic relationships. They will be able to answer comprehension questions and formulate factually precise responses in German. Students will be able to translate selected sentences from Czech into German with due attention to grammatical accuracy, vocabulary, and stylistic appropriateness. They will be able to carry out syntactic, lexical, and other linguistic transformations of sentences and justify their solutions. They will also be familiar with the structure of the second-year written examination and will be able to work independently under timed examination conditions.

Prerequisites
|
German language proficiency at approximately B2 level is expected, together with a basic ability to understand argumentative texts on topics in the humanities and a working knowledge of German grammar and vocabulary required for translation and sentence-transformation tasks. Previous completion of the first-year language and grammar courses is advantageous.

Assessment methods and criteria

Student performance, Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Written exam
Regular attendance at the seminar - up to two excused absences are permitted The seminar concludes with a written test
