Course content
|
Society and Culture in the Middle Ages When studying medieval culture, one encounters both the foreign and the familiar, which is why research consistently addresses the "alterity" (otherness) and "modernity" of the Middle Ages. This rather general lecture will cover various aspects of medieval society and culture, ranging from the medieval social order to the broad realm of fears and desires, attitudes, thought patterns, values, and worldviews, touching upon diverse areas of human life. Topics will include, among others, the estates system, the nobility and the clergy, nature and cosmology, dying and death, love and sexuality, cultural practices, religiosity, dreams, and conceptions of the afterlife.

Learning outcomes
|
When studying medieval culture, one encounters both the foreign and the familiar, which is why research consistently addresses the "alterity" (otherness) and "modernity" of the Middle Ages. This rather general lecture will cover various aspects of medieval society and culture.
Graduates of the course will gain a comprehensive overview of the structures, thought patterns, and mentalities of medieval society. Based on the study of the contemporary social order, religiosity, and cultural practices, they will be able to professionally define and critically reflect on the key historiographical concepts of the "alterity" and "modernity" of the Middle Ages.

Prerequisites
|
This course is intended for students in German studies programs as well as other interested students at Palacký University. Knowledge of German at approximately the B1-B2 level is required.

The series of lectures will be completed with a written exam.
