The first part of Medieval studies introduces students to the question of defining the Middle Ages and Early Modern History (approximately to 1600). The lecture and the seminar combine a general level (working with medieval materials, methodology) with the presentation of period facts and specifics of the perception of the medieval world (using the example of courtly society). Students who decide to continue in the module will gain essential knowledge for further investigation of the Middle Ages; the other students will be provided with the basics of historical and cultural-historical science which they can later use in other modules. In the seminar students will work with texts by acknowledged historians and cultural historians (N. Oehler, J. Le Goff) and with primary texts that are directly connected with topics introduced in the lectures. The seminar intends to present knowledge in a playful and interesting way.

Learning outcomes

The lecture and the seminar from the introductory course intend to provide students with general and more elaborate basics for the interpretation of phenomena in medieval and early modern society and for working with pieces of art of these times (literary texts and sources). Students will be provided with basic methods and scientific approaches that are used by contemporary historiography and how to determine the connection between historiography and other related disciplines. The aim of the seminar is to teach students, in an interesting and interactive way, how to work with both period texts and secondary literature and to teach them basic vocabulary needed when analysing these texts. These courses should also attract more applicants to study Medieval studies.
A positive outlook on the Middle Ages and Medieval studies, confidence when working with medieval texts and sources, ability to interpret German texts regarding Medieval studies. Students learn basic vocabulary from the field of German Medieval studies, cement their knowledge of scholarly writing and grammatical structures typical of scientific texts. Students will be able to read medieval texts (manuscripts and cradle-books), know the most important secondary sources, understand, discuss and explain in German important specifics of the Middle Ages (position of a woman, monastery, Crusades, death). They will know the most prominent European scholars.
