Course content
|
This lecture will provide students with a basic overview of the history of German-speaking countries from the early modern period to the end of the 20th century: 1. The Holy Roman Empire at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period 2. The Church at the end of the Middle Ages - the beginnings of the Reformation 3. The spread of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation 4. Confessional conflicts - the 16th and 17th centuries, the Thirty Years' War 5. Absolutism 6. The Enlightenment 7. The French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, the origins of German nationalism 8. The 19th century - the Restoration and the revolutions of 1848 9. The emergence of a unified Germany 10. The First World War and the Weimar Republic 11. National Socialism and the Third Reich 12. Germany after 1945 13. Austria and Switzerland after 1945

Learning outcomes

The aim of the lecture is to provide students with a basic overview of the history of German-speaking countries from the early modern period to the end of the 20th century.
An overview of the most significant events and trends in German-speaking countries from the beginning of the Reformation to the reunification of Germany. An understanding of key sites in German cultural memory.
