The aim of the lecture "Germany in the 1960s - society, politics, culture" is to familiarise students with developments in German society in the 1960s, with particular emphasis on West German society and its transformation as a result of the protest movements of the time. Lecture topics: 1. Germany in the early 1960s - the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, the Berlin Wall, the Cold War 2. The Federal Republic of Germany: the economic miracle and society - Wohlstandsgesellschaft, consumerism, the family, the media 3. The German Democratic Republic: socialism and everyday life - the SED, the planned economy, the Stasi, everyday life 4. Generational conflict, parents' Nazi past 5. 1966: The Grand Coalition - SPD, CDU/CSU, Kiesinger, emergence of the extra-parliamentary opposition 6. Students and the APO, SDS, universities, Rudi Dutschke, protest culture 7. 1967/68: from protest to revolt - Benno Ohnesorg, the assassination attempt on Dutschke, '68' 8. Germany's past and criticism of Nazism - Coming to terms with the past, the Auschwitz trials, Eichmann 9. The culture of the 1960s - literature, film, pop music, television, the underground 10. Women and social change - emancipation, sexuality, the family, the women's movement 11. West Germany and East Germany in an international context - Berlin, Cuba, Vietnam, Prague 1968 12. 1968 in Germany and Czechoslovakia - Similarities and differences between the protest movements 13. The aim of the seminar is to familiarise students with developments in German society in the 1960s, with particular emphasis on West German society and its transformation as a result of the protest movements of that period
- a basic overview of the political and social history of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic in the 1960s; - an understanding of the differences between developments in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic; - knowledge of significant historical processes and phenomena such as Ostpolitik, the student movement and the extra-parliamentary opposition - an understanding of the 1960s as a period of generational conflict and cultural transformation - placing German developments within the broader context of the Cold War and European history |
