Course content
|
The seminar will introduce the goals and previous development of historical semantics as well as the problems and methods of the analysis of changes in word meaning in contemporary linguistics. Selected problems of the historical semantics of German will be used to demonstrate the possible development of meaning in substantives, verbs, adjectives and particles. Another topic will be the lexemes that have disappeared in the course of language development.

Learning outcomes

The aim of this seminar is to provide basic information on the theoretical and methodological foundations of this discipline. The seminar will also focus on theories concerning the development of meaning in historical semantics and on selected problems in this field.
The seminar will offer a comprehensive overview of various theories of meaning and the actual process of changes of meaning in the diachronic aspect and will be mainly beneficial for doctoral students dealing with historical topics.

Prerequisites
|
active knowledge of German language at the C2 level (the course is held in German), knowledge of basic terminology in the field of linguistics
