Course content
|
The course builds on the course completed in the winter semester and continues to develop students' comprehension of German-language texts in a systematic way. The study materials consist primarily of shorter narrative and argumentative texts appropriate to the students' language level. The texts and accompanying worksheets are provided by the course instructor. When working with narrative texts, students focus on understanding the plot, the characters, temporal and causal relationships, and the distinction between essential and secondary information. When working with argumentative texts, they learn to identify the main topic, the author's position, individual arguments, and the relationships between them. They also practise locating explicitly stated information and drawing conclusions based on the text. The course includes both oral and written responses to questions about the texts. Students formulate their own answers, support them with specific information from the text, and learn to present their views clearly and with appropriate arguments. They also complete short translations of selected passages from German into Czech and work on lexical, grammatical, and stylistic exercises based on the texts discussed. The linguistic and thematic difficulty of the texts and tasks gradually increases over the course of the semester. The course also includes preparation for a mock test, completion of the test, and a subsequent individual feedback meeting in which students' strengths and areas requiring further improvement are discussed.
