Learning outcomes
The course introduces the basic strategies of rationality and correct argumentation, such as the principle of causality, the experimental method, inference, and others. It characterizes specific types of errors in reasoning and argumentation related to these principles. It introduces students to the theory of logical inference, and to different types of reasoning (probabilistic vs. deductive reasoning). The course also highlights errors to avoid during correct argumentation. Introduces procedures for argument reconstruction and evaluation.
Students will be able to characterize the basic principles of reasoning, such as the principle of causality, the use of statistical methods, inference, etc. They will be able to recognize different types of errors in reasoning and argumentation and in the use of the statistical method. They will also know the rules of logical inference and be able to distinguish between deductive and probabilistic reasoning. They will be able to reconstruct an argument and evaluate its persuasiveness. They will also be able to recognize reasoning errors based on the misuse of implication.
