Navigating Geostrategic Dynamics in the Indo-Pacific: Focus on Taiwan Course objectives In this course, we will explore the intricate dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region with a special focus on Taiwan. We will delve into key topics such as the geostrategic concept of the Indo-Pacific, the influential role of China in the Indo-Pacific, the complex interplay between various actors in the region, and a detailed examination of Taiwan encompassing its history, ethnic complexities, recent developments, and human rights issues. This course offers a nuanced perspective on the geopolitical landscape and domestic developments, providing valuable insights into the multifaceted aspects of the region. For 5 days (16-20 June 2025) you will have the opportunity to learn from renowned international experts and participate in additional activities (cross-Strait role play game, city tour, etc.). All expenses, including lunches, will be covered. Requirements on student This course is organized as a summer school (in the building at tř. Svobody 26), with invited international experts discussing various aspects of the Indo-Pacific and Taiwan. Students will attend a 5-day summer school at UPOL (16-20 June 2025, each day approx. 10:00-17:00) organized by the lecturers. EACL Summer School This course contains 4 different topics and each topic will be taught by a different lecturer: (1) "Topics in the syntax of predicate phrases in Mandarin" (Huba Bartos, Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics) (2) "Chinese morphology" (Bianca Basciano, Universit? Ca' Foscari Venezia) (3) "The Chinese nominal" (Joanna Ut-Seong Sio, Palacký University Olomouc) (4) "Invitation to Phonological tone" (Lian Hee Wee, Hong Kong Baptist University) Students will be required to attend ALL lectures and fulfil the individual course requirements. This course is part of the European Association of Chinese Linguistics (EACL) Summer School (16-20 June 2025) (https://sites.google.com/view/eacl2025-summer-school).
