During four terms of the 2nd block student will have the opportunity to choose from the following two subjects: 1. Twentieth century theatre: The course will be focused on the most attractive themes from the area of Czech theatre in 20th century. The cabarets and theatre avant-garde of the period between two world wars. Non-traditional theatre line and its representatives. Club and studio theatre work in Moravia and Silesia . Contemporary drama and theatre. non-professional theatre and its changes. The course will be focused on the most attractive themes from the area of Czech theatre in the second half of the 20th century: periodization of theatrical development, line of the satirical theatre, changes in dramaturgy and playwright, changes in the structure of professional theatre, non-traditional theatre line and its representatives, small theatres of the 60s, author, club and studio theatres of the 70s and 80s, new trends in the 90s, new generation of playwrights and directors, wave of alternative theatre. Themes of history of Czech theatre of the 20th century: 1. Orientation in context of the second half of the 20th century (periodization, historical admission to the topic) 2. Line of satiric theatre (Divadlo satiry, Divadlo Větrník, Divadlo V+W U Nováků, Divadlo ABC) 3. Transmission of dramaturgy and dramatical creation (start of new dramatic in connection with theatre conceptions) 4. Alfréd Radok in National Theatre (transmission of trumped-up and actor style) 5. Polarity of the trumped-up conceptions (Čechovov's and Brecht's line in Czech theatre) 6. Movement of the small stage theatres in the 60th years (birth of small theatre and its profile) 7. Small drama scene in the 60th years (Činoherní klub a Divadlo za branou) 8. Personalities of Czech theatre production in the 60th years 9. The Author and studio theatres in the 70th and 80th years 10. Progress of the regional theatres and dramatical context in the 70th and 80th years 11. Dramatical conception of the 90th years 12. Alternative and independent scene in the end of the 20th century 2. Old Czech theatre from the beginning till the end of the 19th century: The forms and social functions of the medieval theatre, the humanist theatre, changes of baroque theatre. The Enlightenment period and the beginnings of Czech professional theatre. Romanticism and realism, two dominant styles of the Czech theatre in 19th century. German theatre in Czech lands. Moravian and Silesian theatre. Non-professional theatre.

The aim is to provide to the students complex overview of the crucial periods of theatre evolution in Czech lands from the beginning till the end of the 20th century.The aim of this course is to introduce the present histographical approach to the evolutionary tendencies and style transformations of the Czech theatre in the second half of the 20th century. In the thematically specified chapters the teacher will outline the dramaturgic line, the style of the plays and the actors, introduce the works of the selected theatres and important directorial personalities in the line of the traditional (repertoire) theatre as well as the line of the non-traditional activities (small, authorial and studio theatres). The emphasis will be placed on the observation of the continuity of the style transformations that influenced the present theatre structure and its diversification. The aim is to provide to the students complex overview of the crucial periods of theatre evolution in Czech lands from the beginning till the end of the 20th century.
Student will acquire complex overview of Czech theatre functions and forms in the different periods of the social evolution till the end of the 20th century. Student will know the contemporary historical admission to the research of theatre of the 20th century and he could orientate in larger context of the second half of the 20th century. Student will characterize creation of particular theatres and popular theatre personalities, he will define profile creative conceptions using learned terminology and demonstrate their meanings on the concrete inscenations. Student will be able to valorize theatre conceptions connected with personalities of Czech theatre of the second half of the 20th century and to judge their meanings in continuation of theatre development. He could struct monitored period by using the contemporary historical admissions, he could analyze the particular tendencies and theoretically and historically specify their dominant aspects, also their movement and their mutual coherences. Student will be capable to formulate his opinion of the modern history of Czech theatre on the ground of his knowledge, he could appreciate the texts with special issues, apply the coherences of historical progress of particular tendencies to the reflection of contemporary image of dramatical creation.
