Course content
The course consists of two parts - an introductory lecture (Monday) and a follow-up seminar (Thursday, 3 different groups). Content: - Introduction, historical context - (neo)formalist analysis - narrative analysis - analysis of film style - character analysis - comparative analysis focusing on the relationship between the film and the literary text - genre analysis - theory of authorship - feminism and gender analysis - queer theory - intertextuality

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic equipment for the analysis of a film work. FUNDAMENTALS OF FILM ANALYSIS: REBECCA, 1940, AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF FILM ANALYSIS Instructor: Mgr. Milan Hain, Ph.D. The course will introduce students to the basic possibilities of film analysis. The analytical approaches discussed will include: - (neo)formalist analysis - narrative analysis - analysis of film style - character analysis - comparative analysis focusing on the relationship between the film and the literary text - genre analysis - theory of authorship - feminism and gender analysis - queer theory - intertextuality After introducing the basic background and theses, the different approaches will be demonstrated with the example of Rebecca, 1940, dir: Alfred Hitchcock. Upon completion of the course, learners will be proficient in the basic analytical tools of the field, which will enable them to competently approach their own analyses, especially in the form of seminar papers. COURSE OBJECTIVES: - To introduce the main currents of thought and analytical trends in the field of film studies. - to introduce students to some of the key professional texts and their authors - to provide learners with the basic equipment to analyse a film work - develop analytical and critical thinking through group discussions

Assessment methods and criteria

REQUIREMENTS: - Participation in the seminar in at least 80% of the seminar sessions - Familiarity with the required readings, activity in class, perfect knowledge of the film Rebecca, 1940 - preparedness in the form of written notes of 1,5 standard pages (2 700 characters) for each seminar lesson and completion of other assignments - completion of a final written test The final grade will be calculated on the basis of the score achieved.
