Course content
Topic: Contemporary Czech women theatre directors and their dramaturgical strategies Topics: 1. Context of the turn of the millennium, continuity with the previous period of the 1990s, definition of basic tendencies and trends in the previous period, transformation of themes and approach to classical dramatic works 2. New genre forms and types of theatre in the 21st century, transformation of the production model, definition of a narrower range of directorial personalities 3. women directors of the 90s and the promotion of their concepts in new theatrical contexts 4. Personalities of women's directing at the turn of the century - the emergence of the line, inspirational starting points, connections with Czech new drama and adaptation strategies 5. Contemporary women directors and adaptation strategies 6. Contemporary women directors and auteur directing 7. Contemporary women directors and staging classics 8. Contemporary women directors and independent production 9. Contemporary women directors in repertory theatre 10. Contemporary women directors and alternative work 11. Contemporary women directors - the emerging generation 12. Tendencies and concepts observed - summary, attempt to trace stylistic lines

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the major creative personalities who represent the line of theatre drama directing with an emphasis on the work of significant female directors in the Czech theatre of the last three decades. The lecture will focus on individual personalities of female directors and their work and will explain the basis of directorial poetics (dramaturgical and expressive) through the presentation of stylistic approaches in individual productions. At the same time, the lecture will allow to observe the specificity in terms of dramaturgical strategies, the staging of significant texts of Czech drama and the transformation of the understanding of theatre and its function in society. The course takes the form of a monologic lecture in combination with a seminar form - assignment of continuous work with texts and their analysis.
The student will gain a comprehensive overview of the significant personalities of Czech drama directing, the changes in style and dramaturgy in the period after 1989. The student is able to evaluate theatrical concepts associated with creative personalities of the Czech theatre in the 21st century and assess their significance in the continuity of theatrical development. The student is able to structure the period under study using contemporary historiographical approaches, to analyse individual tendencies, to identify theoretically and historically their dominant aspects as well as their movements and interrelations. Based on the acquired knowledge, the student is able to formulate an informed opinion on Czech theatre directing and dramatic production, assess texts with the given issue, apply the context of the historical development of individual tendencies to the reflection of the contemporary form of theatre.
