Learning outcomes
The course combines analytical and interpretative methods of performance and film studies to analyse the film Okupace (Occupation, dir. Michal Nohejl, 2021, CZ). Through established methods, practiced during class work, as well as by ad hoc impressions, observations and ideas, generated by interdisciplinary discussion we will answer questions as: How the film combines framing, staging and editing, how does it stage cultural traumas by role-playing and theatre metaphor, and how does it construct the theme of heroism? The secondary aim of the course is to transgress disciplinary scruples of conventional theatre and film studies an to practice collaborative group work "between performance and cinema".
The student will learn the techniques associated with the analysis of film form, especially editing, shot composition and staging of mise-en-scene. They will learn to apply concepts of dramaturgical sociology and theatre theory related to role-playing (social role, mask, facade). They will also learn to apply concepts of cultural history (collective memory, cultural trauma, staging) to audiovisual material. They will practice the procedures of semantic analysis and topology of fictional worlds. They will gain basic insight into atmosphere analysis and set design as a generator of atmospheres. They will strengthen their communication skills through teamwork and public presentation.
