Course content
1. Introduction in the drama of an interwar avant-garde (main tendencies, authors, works). Methods of analysis. 2. Collective analysis of some chosen dramas (variation of pieces): Guillaume Apollinaire: The Breast of Tiresias (1917) Jean Cocteau: The Wedding on the Eiffel Tower (1921) Antigone (1922) Orfeo(1926) Georges Ribémont-Dessaignes: The Emperor of China(1916) The Mute Canary (1919) Vladimir Majakovskij: Mysteria-buffa (1918) Bertolt Brecht: A Man´s a Man (1926) The Threepenny Opera (1928) Mother Courage and Her Children (1939) Adolf Hoffmeister: Nevěsta (1927) Vítězslav Nezval: Depeše na kolečkách (1922) Zlověstný pták (1935)

Learning outcomes
Aim of the seminar is to introduce in some representative dramas of interwar avant-garde, in their stylistic particularity, structure and stage qualities. It is proper to combine with courses World theatre A, B.
Student becomes acquainted with the plays of interwar avant-garde, will be able to analyse a modern drama and to include it in the contemporary art context and in development of theatre.
Prerequisites
Knowledge from theory of drama, ability to drama analyse (Theatre seminar 1, 2), knowledge of modern and avant-garde tendencies of the first half of the 20th century and history of theatre (World theatre A, B).

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Active participation in analysis of the chosen dramas. Careful preparation on each lesson, analysis according to the teacher´s instructions. Knowledge of terminology and of history of theatre and literature. Compulsory participation (75%).
