COURSE PROGRAMME AND DATES OF CLASSES: Introductory class, outlines of the contemporary American film industry The American film industry after 2000; case study: the LEGO movie Blockbusters and franchises; Lord of the Rings case study + student presentations I Authorship in contemporary Hollywood; Alfonso Cuarón case study + student presentations II. Stardom in Contemporary Hollywood; Kristen Stewart and George Clooney case studies + student presentations III. Complex Narratives in American Film after 2000; Dunkirk case study + student presentations IV.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to current trends in American cinema. The course combines lecture and seminar formats and focuses on selected production trends, genres, or notable auteurs from the 1990s to the present, both in mainstream cinema and in art and independent film. The basic components of the American film industry at the production, distribution, and exhibition/consumption levels will be introduced, and topics such as Hollywood in the era of globalization and conglomerates, franchises and the pursuit of synergy, complex narratives, individual and studio authorship, etc. will be discussed through case studies. The course will have a profile set up in IS Moodle to share materials and further organize the class.
