KDU/RACI Cíle předmětu (anotace): Topic: Audiovisual Metaphors in Films and Series Guest lecturer: Kathrin Fahlenbrach (University of Hamburg) Since their historical beginnings, image-based media such as film and television have developed technical apparatus and aesthetic strategies to address the human senses and emotions as precisely as possible. In this seminar, we will discuss approaches in cognitive film and media theory that focus on the strategies audiovisual media use to engage the body, with a particular focus on this "aesthetics of effect." The focus will be on examining metaphorical forms through the interplay of images and sounds, which can engage viewers on a pre-conscious, affective, and bodily level: metaphors of thought, namely, through which we visualize complex relationships, abstract ideas and concepts, as well as "invisible" emotions. This kind of metaphorical thinking enables us to understand abstract concepts such as time, death, or lifeas well as "invisible" emotional statesin concrete terms: as rivers, as buildings, or as exploding bodies (e.g., "bursting with rage"). At the beginning of the seminar, we will explore some of the fundamentals of embodied metaphors, which, following cognitive metaphor theory (e.g., Lakoff & Johnson 1989), are regarded as a fundamental principle of human thought and imagination. We will then examine selected examples from films and TV series to explore how body-based metaphors are modeled in film and media studies. Požadavky na studenta: - 100% attendance - Active participation - Final project (written essay) Obsah: The course will be in the form of a lecture and one-day seminar (8th - 9th October 2026).
