Course content
The lecture follows in the selected chapters puppet theatre as a specific field since its beginning to contemporary period. It presents theoretical determination of puppet theatre in historical context of Czech and European theatre, it presents also historical progress of Czech puppet theatre in its particular tendencies and it acquaints the popular personalities in example the profile ensembles creation of the second half of the 20th century and the contemporary conception of puppet theatre. Topics: 1.Idea of puppet and puppet theatre Puppet in dramatical system, taxonomy of puppet, transmission of meaning of puppet theatre as a separate art field of objective theatre. 2. From the ritual to the sources of puppet theatre Ritual basis of puppet, puppet as a magical item, animate points in the Asian and African cultures. 3. The European context and puppet theatre in the past Puppet and its changes from antique to baroque 4. Forming of the European theory of puppet theatre Pioneers of theory: from romanticism to the big theatre reform, formation of specific aesthetic of puppet theatre 5. Forming of puppet theatre theory in Czech context Prague linguistic circle, structuralistic meaning of theatre. Called as the line of theoretical meaning (Erik Kolár, Miroslav Česal, Jan Císař, Karel Makonj, Petr Pavlovský). 6. Types of puppets, relation of the actor towards the puppet Puppet as a part of dramatical artifact, technological parameters and typology of puppets, mode of using. Functions of puppets and relationship with animator. 7. Tendencies of the contemporary European puppet theatre Alternative objective theatre in the second half of the 20th century (Bread and Pupppet, Peter Schumann, Philippe Genty, Duda Paiva etc.) 8. Origin of the Czech puppet theatre and periodization Foreign footloose theatre companies, folk puppeteers and their repertoire, drama of the national rebirth, original texts. 9. Familiar puppet theatre and era of federal theatre Phenomenon of familiar theatre, federal puppet theatre, propagator of puppet theatre, organization UNIMA and magazine The Puppeteer, Jindřich Veselý. 10. Beginnings of the professional companies, puppet theatre and avant-garde Ambition to have the more professional organizations (Umělecká loutková scéna, Loutkové divadlo Feriálních osad, Josef Skupa, Jiří Trnka a Dřevěné divadlo etc.) 11. Czech puppet theatre and its state in the second half of the 20th century Professional base of the puppet theatres, Ústřední loutkové divadlo, differentiation of theatres in 60s, profile scenes and personalities. 12. Puppet theatre at the turning of the millenium Transmission of professional base, independent scene, genre and class permeability, street production, physical theatre, visual theatre and objective theatre. Festivals and shows. Course is supplied with recording from the performances.

Learning outcomes
Lectures are focused on the important chapters of the puppet theatre in historical context. Aim of this course is theoretical specification of the puppet theatre in the Czech and European context. Attention is directed to the presentation of the history of the Czech puppet theatre, including its contemporary conception and its profile theatre groups.
Student has knowledge of the basic predisposition of puppet theatre beginning as a separate field of theatre. He knows the different periods of development and can define development of the theoretical concepts in Czech and European historical context. He knows the typology of the puppets and the transmissions of aesthetic principles of puppet theatre including the contemporary tendencies of puppet theatre. Student orientates in essential progressive periods of Czech and European puppet theatre, he characterizes the historical functions of puppet theatre and he considers transmission of puppet theatre in contemporary period. He can also analyze these informations by using correct terminology.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the basic theoretical terms of the theatre and the historical development of theatre.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam

10 titles of the field related literature and staging for analysis. Colloquium: Knowledge of the covered information and basic literature. To the final exam includes an analysis of record from the list of recommended titles, discussion about chosen text from the basic literature and oral part of exam focused on application of terminology and knowledge of facts.
