Course content
A - Russian drama in the 18th century 1. tragedy (Sumarokov, Majkov, Rzevskij, Cheraskov, Nikolev) 2. prosaic comedy and sentimental drama of the 70s years (Lukin, Jelchaninov, Veverkin, Potěmkin, Fonvizin) 3. tragedy of the first quarter of 19th century (Ozerov, Kjuchelbeker) 4. verse comedy (Kňažnin, Šachovskoj, Chmelnickij) B - Russian drama at the begining of the 19th century 1. Gribojedov 2. Pushkin 3. Lermontov 4. Gogol C - The roots of modern Russian drama - between Gogol and Chekhov 1. Ostrovskij 2. Suchovo - Kobylin D - Drama of popular Russian novelists 1. Turgeněv 2. Tolstoj E - Chekhov

Learning outcomes
Lectures focus on history of Russian Drama in the 18th and 19th century in wider historical and literary context. Portraits of individual authors and their principal works.
Orientation in Russian drama issues of the 18th and 19th century. Student will learn of the essential works, he will orientate in history of literature. He will also learn the basic methods of hermeneutic analysis. He could interpret texts with understanding of their semantic and meaning aspects. He will also acquire the ability to formulate and defend his opinion in discussion.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the essential works of world drama literature and of principal terminology of theatre and drama theory. Orientation in context of European literature of the 18th and 19th century and in the main movements, styles and periods.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Written exam

Final exam included with reading of 10 plays.
