Obsah předmětu

This course deals with Kubrick's career from its beginnings to his death in 1999. Instead of listening to the tutor's lectures, students will read some of his publications, which are mostly based on research in the Stanley Kubrick Archive at the University of the Arts London on the making, marketing, critical reception and audiences of Kubrick's films and often situate them in wider film-historical and socio-cultural contexts. In addition to the screenings in class, students will watch some of the films at home. In this way, they will view almost all of Kubrick's work across the four weeks of this course. Seminar discussions will focus on the films' style, form and themes, and there will also be various group research exercises: comparisons between a film and its literary source; examinations of a film's marketing (notably through the analysis of posters and trailers); discussions about a film's reception by critics and general audiences.
