Course content |
Course structure: This course will consist of a weekly lecture and discussion (about half and half), with assigned readings and films. Films will be available on the class Google Drive, readings are available online through a variety of online sources. Student will be expected to answer questions and discuss these when asked in class. There will be one midterm essay / basic research project, which will be a short 5-6 page essay on a single film. The final exam for this class will be an oral exam, similar in structure to the state exams. Students will select a question and have 15 minutes (maximum) to answer it and any follow up questions. Grading Policy: Students will be graded on the following: 25% Class Participation 10% Attendance 30% Midterm Essay 35% Final Exam These points will be combined into a grade that shows if a student passes the requirements (splneno) or does not. Passing is a grade above a 4 on the standard UPOL (best) 1-5 (worst) scale.

Attention! This course will be taught in English. Written work and oral exams can be in English, Czech, or Slovak. This course will be an analytical course focused on two related areas of film theory and analysis: directorial style, and the basic concepts of formalist film analysis. To this end, we will examine the careers of selected directors, learning how to apply these concepts to in-depth analysis.
