This course will consist of a weekly lecture, with assigned readings and films. Films will be available on the class Google Drive, readings are available online through a variety of online sources. Student will be expected to answer questions and discuss these when asked in class. There will be one midterm essay / basic research project, which will be a short 5-6 page essay on a single film. The final exam for this class will be an oral exam, similar in structure to the state exams. Students will select a question and have 15 minutes (maximum) to answer it and any follow up questions. Pozor! Jazyk výuky tohoto kurzu je angličtina. Písemné práce a ústní zkoušky mohou být v češtině nebo slovenštině. The goal of this course is to provide students with a broad basis in genre theory, as well as practical application of these theoretical tools when discussing film. While this course cannot cover every genre and sub-genre, it will provide students with a solid foundation in the most common genres in contemporary cinema, as well as as establishing a firm theoretical basis for further analytical work.
