Course content
Comparatistics - basic concepts, development of the discipline, - the concept of comparatistics according to Angelika Corbineau - Hoffmann, - comparatistics as a dialogical theory. Modern concept of Peter V. Zima. Hermeneutics - basic concepts, - Schleiermacher and the foundations of hermeneutics as a science of understanding a work of art, - the development of hermeneutics in the 20th century (Ricour, Gadamer). Major figures - Immanuel Kant, - Roman Ingarden, - Theodor W. Adorno, - Jan Mukařovský. Analytic and Continental Tradition - Sources of inspiration, - Areas of interest, - methods and argumentation. Evolutionary aesthetics - Darwinism and consilience, - a naturalized theory of art, - naturalized film theory. Neuroaesthetics - spectatorship and perception, - mirror neurons, - neurocinematics.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to selected sources of inspiration of film theory in aesthetics and philosophy. Upon completion, students should be able to identify different thought traditions and relate them to film theories. Lectures will emphasize hermeneutic and comparativist lines, major figures in thought about art, the differences between analytic and continental aesthetics, and neuroaesthetics and evolutionary aesthetics.
