The aim of this elective seminar is to introduce students to the main possibilities that Digital Humanities currently offers literary studies, particularly in the field of computational natural language processing. The seminar, which is not intended as an alternative to corpus linguistics courses at the Faculty of Arts, Palacký University Olomouc, consists of two closely interconnected parts. The first part will present selected examples of the application of quantitative methods in literary studies, aesthetics and, where the subject of research is a literary work and related issues, linguistics. It will also introduce current Czech research projects drawing on quantitative corpus-based methods, natural language processing (NLP), or digital literary cartography. The second part will focus on the practical acquisition of basic programming skills for NLP in Python. The seminar does not aim to provide a comprehensive overview of Digital Humanities research in literary studies. Instead, it introduces students to one particular area of literary Digital Humanities based on the computational processing and analysis of natural language, whose potential can also be applied in literary research. To receive course credit, students will be required to complete an assigned task independently. No previous programming experience is required.
The student will learn the basics of NLP in Python.
