Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this seminar is to provide insight into selected travel texts from the Mediterranean regions of the Western Balkans (specifically Dalmatia and Montenegro) and the Apennine Peninsula (present-day Italy), written during the 'long' 19th century by writers, artists, naturalists, teachers, or civil servants. In analyzing these texts, we will focus primarily on the issue of alterity (the representation of the 'Other') and the methods of its presentation.
The student will acquire knowledge of 19th-century Czech travel literature, as well as a basic understanding of the theory of alterity and the cultural and historical context of the Western Balkans.

Prerequisites
|
A basic understanding of the history of Czech literature and 19th-century history. The seminar is a loose continuation of the elective seminar 'Czech Travel Writings from the Mediterranean up to 1918 I,' which was dedicated to travel texts from the 15th to the 18th centuries.

Student performance
Course Requirements: 1) Active participation in the seminar (3 unexcused absences permitted) 2) Reading of at least 5 assigned travel texts 3) Preparation of 1 written report Structure of the Written Report: A) Context and Background Outline of the contemporary context (historical or literary-historical); the identity of the traveler (and any companions they traveled with), the purpose of the journey; the dating of the journey, the dating of when the travelogue was written, the identity of the author of the travelogue; the purpose of writing the travelogue; the dating and methods of publication or dissemination of the travelogue, editions of the travelogue from its initial publication to the present day, and the language (or linguistic variants of the travelogue). B) Itinerary and Intercultural Analysis Creation of an itinerary for the journey (the route on a timeline, including the mode of transport); the representation of intercultural contact in the Mediterranean region. C) Reception and Literary Significance Scholarly (and reader) reception of the travelogue: who studied the travelogue and why, from what perspective, what they analyzed and for what purpose, and what conclusions they reached; the position of the travelogue within various periods of the history of Czech literature.
