Course content
|
The Student Linguistics Competition provides an opportunity to present the results of students' partial research conducted as part of preparing a bachelor's or master's thesis, a research paper, a seminar paper, or a student grant project (e.g., IGA). Students may also work in small research teams of a maximum of three members. Both bachelor's and master's degree students are eligible to apply. The competition conference is usually held at the beginning of May, and the best papers advance to the national round, which takes place as part of the International Meeting of Young Linguists in Olomouc in the second half of May.

Learning outcomes
|
The competition is open to students of the Bachelor's and Master's study programmes in Czech Philology. The task of each registered student is to submit a sample of their work of approximately 15 standard pages (approx. 27,000 characters) and to present the submitted work orally within 15 minutes on the day of the competition. The competition papers deal with language, linguistics, or related borderline disciplines (e.g., sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics), but are otherwise not thematically restricted.
Academic Argumentation: Critically reflect on one's own and others' scholarly texts, defend one's conclusions in academic discussion with well-founded arguments, and respond to questions from opponents or the audience. Academic Communication: Effectively and clearly present the results of one's own research activities to an expert audience within a given time limit. Autonomy and Self-Reflection: Independently design and execute a smaller research output (scholarly paper) and reflect on the level of one's own academic training.

Assessment methods and criteria

Student performance
Requirements for the elaboration of the competition paper: a) The written version contains the requirements customary for academic papers (introduction, theoretical part, research part - description of the method, analysis of linguistic data, results, conclusion, list of references). b) The oral version accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation. c) Answers to the questions of the competition jury, discussion. Evaluation criteria: a) Ability to apply secondary literature. b) Written version: text structure, formulation of the aim and conclusion, material analysis, interpretation. c) Oral presentation: PowerPoint presentation. d) Discussion: response to questions.
