Learning outcomes
|
The course will primarily focus on the interpretation of selected prose works by Central European authors. Its objective is twofold: on the one hand, to use specific prose material to expand upon the theoretical issues of literary interpretation from the compulsory course Interpretation of a Literary Text (authorial intention, the limits of interpretation, the implied reader, context, intertextuality, etc.); and on the other hand, to provide students with a broader cultural context for the study of Czech literature. The course will examine the specific characteristics of the Central European literary space, its internal diversity, and its shared themes, topoi, or modes of writing (the Holocaust, multilingual identity, the crisis of the subject, exile, melancholy, fragmentation, etc.).
Upon completion of the course, the student will gain fundamental insight into the 20th-century Central European literary context, concepts of Central Europe, and practical experience in the interpretation of literary texts.

Basic concepts of literary theory and the theory of text interpretation.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Seminar Work
During the semester, each student will be required to prepare one presentation (an interpretation of assigned prose) and one co-presentation (the contemporary literary and historical context for the seminar reading), read at least 6 prose books assigned as seminar reading and one contextual analysis, and actively participate in guided discussions. A maximum of three absences is permitted.
