Learning outcomes
|
The course is designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the literature and culture of Renaissance humanism in the Czech lands (ca 1580-1620). The aim of the course is to broaden students' knowledge of the literary culture of humanism and the early modern period, with particular emphasis on the Moravian context and its connections to broader European developments. The course will focus on major figures, institutions, and centres of humanist learning, on the relationship between literature and patronage, printing, education, and scholarly knowledge, as well as on transformations in literary communication during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Students will be guided in the interpretation of various types of texts, including Latin and Czech humanist writings, prescriptive and disciplinary literature, scholarly and didactic prose, exile literature, and texts addressing contemporary social and cultural phenomena. Particular attention will be paid to questions of authorship and gender, representations of childhood and education, forms of comic writing, fear and death, representations of the Ottoman Empire, and literary depictions of landscape, nature, and the city. Upon completing the course, students should be able to situate selected literary works within their historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts; characterize the principal forms of humanist literary culture in Moravia; analyse the relationship between literary texts and contemporary social discourses; and independently interpret early modern texts using appropriate approaches from literary history and cultural history.

Active participation in seminars (a maximum of two unexcused absences). Preparation and delivery of an oral presentation on an assigned topic.
