1. Introduction to versification. Practice of basic methodological steps in the analysis of poetic rhythm. 2. Rhythmic impulse. Verse and sentence intonation. 3. The Czech iamb and its various forms. 4. The development of the Czech trochee. 5. The dactyl and free verse. The iambic-trochaic meter with variations. 6. Phonetic instrumentation and the "musicality" of Czech verseanalysis of selected texts. 7. Lyrical and epic styles. Emil Staiger and Basic Concepts of Poetics. 8. The fictional world of lyric poetry. The semiotic subject, the lyrical subject, and self-address. 9. Poetic naming, metaphor, and metonymy. 10. Time and Space in Lyric Poetry. Gaston Bachelard and Marie Kubínová. 11. Genres in lyric poetry (reflective lyric poetry, the sonnet). 12. Genres in epic poetry (the ballad, the cycle, and lyric-epic compositions in 20th-century Czech poetry).

Learning outcomes
|
This seminar is practical in nature; its purpose is to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired (from the lectures) to practical analysis. Its structure will therefore follow the composition of the lecture series. First, we will focus on versological analysis, followed by issues of genre, questions of literary communication (the lyrical subject, the semiotic subject, the self-stylization of the lyrical speaker, and self-address in poetry). We will also address issues of phonetic instrumentation, poetic naming, poetic imagery, and so on.

1. A maximum of two absences. 2. Active participation in discussions and class activities. 3. Preparation of texts for shared analysis (if a student is absent from class, it is their responsibility to find out what assignments were given and prepare for the next class).
