This course, combining lectures with seminars, will not only familiarize students with the current state of the field in contemporary literary studies (structuralist textology, genetic criticism, American textual criticism), but will also present a brief history of this discipline and outline specific issues that are reflected in the discipline's current state (models of mediation, the act of writing, the editor, the censor, variants, and style). The lectures will be followed by a series of seminars. While the purpose of the lectures is to lay out the theoretical foundation of the field of textology, the seminars will focus more on the practical aspects of editing literary texts and literary-historical sources; that is, the seminars will emphasize the practical analysis of specific sources.
