Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the publishing process of non-periodical publications, i.e. to lead them to understand the principles of editorial work and professions related to the publication and distribution of books. In addition to the discussion parts of the seminar, which discuss issues of editorial workflow, editorial techniques, basic information about the market structure, distribution, sales, promotion, legal agenda, state regulation, printing, etc., students learn to work with specific types of texts and practice their editing and proofreading. We work with real excerpts of manuscripts, discuss editorial interventions and appropriate solutions.
The student understands the process of preparing a text for publication, is familiar with the mechanisms of the book market, can decide which mechanisms and techniques are appropriate to use with regard to the type of text and the target group (readers), perceives the dilemmas that an editor solves in his or her daily work and can propose solutions to non-standard situations. He or she is familiar with the basics of copyright law and knows where to look for additional information, understands the methods of state regulation of the book market, can design and evaluate the economic side of publishing a book, prepare a publication plan and create a budget, master proofreading marks and can use them. He or she knows the basic methods of book marketing and can consider their effect. He or she understands the specifics of digital publishing.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Written exam

Students receive credit for active work in the seminar, completing homework and successfully passing the credit test. The teacher provides them with excerpts of real texts and basic information on how to prepare them editorially (via the Moodle e-learning system). Students bring edited texts to each seminar, and individual interventions in the text are then discussed with the teacher. The credit test tests knowledge of the publishing process to the extent that it corresponds to the teacher's presentations that are available to students in the Moodle e-learning system.
