Learning outcomes
|
The lecture course will focus on the origins and transformations of European literary thought from the era of ancient Greece up to the 19th century, when literary studies emerged as an independent and autonomous discipline. It will trace fundamental literary categories (mimésis, techné/art, genius, imagination, fiction, etc.), their origins, semantic modifications, and shifts within the context of period thinkinga context in which reflections on literature often overlapped with other competing areas of thought, or where these domains (such as ethics, religion, philosophy, and the natural sciences) were not yet distinctly differentiated. The goal of the course is not only to impart knowledge from the history of literary thought, but also to demonstrate that thinking about literature is a form of thought in motion, possessing a fluid conceptual framework. This course is part of the Older Czech Literature module, coordinated by Prof. D. Mocná.
