1. Methodological and terminological section; empirical research: - Terminological clarification: media studies, cultural studies, book studies; - Typology of media; mass media; the sociological construct and institutions of the media; oral vs. written media; - main themes of the field of research, discussion, examples; variations and the purpose of research; - media and society vs. media as society (Deuze) - the empirical-cognitive tradition in media and book studies; Lazarsfeld; Trávníček; statistics on book culture 2. Critical theory and cultural studies module: - social criticism, theory of ideology, the culture industry: Marxism, the Frankfurt School; the mass-market book versus art; the book industry; - media and their social and ideological functions in the second half of the 20th century: Habermas, Debord - cultural studies: Williams, Hall, Fiske; the Birmingham School; open reading, encoding and decoding of meaning (Hall); popular culture (Fiske); Block 3: Technologisation: - the technodeterminist view of the media, the Toronto School, the Toronto School's typology; the book as a time-biased medium; - the American tradition: D. Boorstin, N. Postman, W. Ong; - H. Jenkins: convergence culture, participatory culture

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the seminar is to familiarise students with different perspectives on the understanding of media and mass media, with a focus on the book as a medium and its function within various methodological approaches. The seminar presents and interprets some of the fundamental theoretical approaches and schools of thought of the 20th century, with a focus on media studies and book studies.
Course graduates: - are able to identify the key theoretical traditions in media studies and apply their frameworks to contemporary practice, including in the field of book publishing; - are able to explain key typological differences in media, both synchronically and diachronically; - are able to explain various theoretical approaches to 'reading' media content and its reception within society; - are able to critically assess the role and influence of the media in society in terms of power, integration, change and public discourse; - are able to assess the potential impacts of technological changes on the functions of the media in society;

- final assessment test (comprising three parts; a pass mark of 60% is required in each individual part) - maximum of 2 absences - reading of compulsory (assigned) texts, preparation for discussion and the ability to answer questions set in advance
