Course content
|
- British and postcolonial literature: From the legacy of the 19th century through modernism to contemporary works by diaspora authors and postcolonial theory. - American literature: Developments from the advent of modernism through the Lost Generation, the Harlem Renaissance, postmodernism and Generation X to literature following 11 September 2001. - German-language literature: Developments from the Enlightenment through Expressionism, interwar literature and post-Auschwitz poetry to post-war developments, linguistic experiments and migrant literature.

Learning outcomes
|
The course provides a comprehensive overview of key developmental trends, movements and representative authors in British, American and German-language literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. The aim is to familiarise students with the aesthetic innovations of modernism, the interwar avant-garde and reflections on social crises and the Holocaust. Emphasis is placed on understanding the plurality of voices through ethnic literatures, postcolonial theories and works by migrants.
Graduates of this module will be able to: - Understand the periodisation and major literary movements of the English- and German-speaking regions under study. - Carry out an independent literary-theoretical interpretation of a text, utilising concepts such as modernism, stream of consciousness and expressionism. - Apply postcolonial theories of diaspora, hybridity and Orientalism to specific literary works. - Contextualise fictional texts within the framework of historical events and social crises in modern society.

Student performance
- Active participation in face-to-face tutorials and consultations. - Independent preparation and study of the assigned compulsory texts from primary sources. - Ongoing completion of tasks on Moodle (e.g. text analyses, completion of worksheets). - Successful completion of an examination comprising a theoretical and historical overview and an open-ended comparative question involving an independent analysis of a selected work.
