The content of the placement is structured on an individual basis according to the profile of the host institution and the approved placement plan. It includes, in particular (but not exclusively), the following areas: - Editorial and publishing activities: assessing manuscripts or other texts; linguistic, stylistic and editorial preparation of texts; proofreading; and communicating with authors, translators and graphic designers. - Publishing production and administrative and operational tasks: familiarisation with the practice of planning series and editorial schedules; familiarisation with the complexity of the book production process. Working with book paratexts. Targeted sales. - Memory, archival and specialist institutions: Working with manuscripts and specialist collections; making sources available through publication; cataloguing, archiving and digitisation. - Promotion and book marketing: Preparing blurbs, press releases and marketing materials; managing publication catalogues and presenting the publishing output.

The aim of the compulsory professional placement is to deepen and apply, in a real-world operational environment, the comprehensive theoretical and practical skills acquired during the 'Editing and Publishing Practice' study programme. The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how institutions related to the field operate (publishing houses, editorial offices of periodicals and book series, libraries, memory institutions, distribution and book companies, and academic and research institutions). The placement provides students on combined-mode programmes with detailed experience of editorial, publishing, organisational and production activities, consolidates their professional skills and prepares them for independent practice in specialist roles within the book and cultural sectors.
Students acquire, supplement and expand their skills and knowledge in the following ways, amongst others: - They independently and professionally apply textological, editorial, proofreading, typographical and production procedures when working on specific editorial and book projects. - They carry out operational and specialist tasks relating to the preparation of texts for publication, the assessment of manuscripts, editorial processing, archiving and the promotion of book production under the guidance of a mentor. - They are familiar with the legislative and commercial framework of the publishing market, editorial work, copyright and the book industry in the Czech Republic and abroad. - They familiarise themselves with other processes, institutions, practices and operations related to various aspects of the so-called 'book communication sphere'. Graduates of the placement also critically reflect on their own professional development, the effectiveness of their work processes and the benefits of the placement through a structured self-evaluation report.
