Course content
|
The individual thematic blocks include approximately: 1. Type and typography: type in practice, rules of typesetting, typesetting composition, etc. 2. Typography - historical overview. 3. Typography in Czech book culture. 4. Important Czech typographers of the 20th century. 5. Trends in book typesetting - a presentation tutorial with examples. 6. Typographic contexts: typography as a creative tool, experiment, avant-garde typography, etc. 6. Typographic contexts: typographic society, nation, nationality and typography; 6. Typographic contexts: typography of public space.

Learning outcomes
|
The course combines a theoretical approach to typography as part of book culture with practical typography. The main objectives of the course are: - introduction to the basic typographic rules; - introducing selected examples of good and bad practice; - introduction to the historical development of modern (Czech) book typography; - placing typography in the context of the humanities.
Upon successful completion of the course, the student: 1. Applies basic and advanced typographic and typesetting rules 2. Critically analyzes the visual and material aspects of the book in a historical and social context 3. Anticipates and resolves technological challenges of text transfer 4. Proposes an adequate concept for book design and visual identity 5. Applies typographic thinking within the broader realm of book culture and public life

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Analyssis of the Student's Portfolio, Written exam
1) passing a writen test focusing on knowledge and application of typographical rules; 2) passing a writen test focusing on the history and theory of typography in the context of book studies; 3) creating a personal portfolio of typography samples - the list and aim is updated for each academic year; 4) completing ongoing and additional assignments in the Moodle LMS, if these are set for the academic year in question;
