The course is divided into six tutorials with the following content: 1. Basic concepts of editorial preparation of older Czech literary monuments 2. History and development of editions of older Czech literary monuments until 1989 3. Editorial practice after 1989 and current methodological discussions 4. Paleography, graphic systems and historical phonology of Czech 5. Historical grammar, diachronic lexicology and lexicography 6. Comprehensive analysis and editorial processing of an Old Czech text

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the seminar is to introduce students to the textual issues surrounding Old Czech literary works and to provide them with the linguistic knowledge required for this work. The seminar will cover the development of editorial practice and discuss editorial rules in the preparation of editions of Old Czech literary texts. Students will be introduced to the issues of transliteration and transcription, the differences between a reader's edition and a critical edition, the rules governing an editor's interventions in the text (emendations, conjectures, etc.), and the preparation of editorial notes, an index, explanatory notes, etc. Furthermore, students will be introduced to the fundamental processes in the development of the Czech language at the phonological, grammatical and lexical levels, to the evolution of orthographic systems, and to the core specialist literature on the subject, including online resources.
Students will master basic textological and editological methods for preparing various types of editions, understand the historical development of writing and orthography, and gain an overview of key changes in the development of the Czech language and their use in the reconstruction and transcription of historical texts. They are capable of independently performing philological analysis and transcription of Old and Middle Czech written monuments.

To obtain credits, students will have to work out an edition of excerpt of Old Czech/Middle Czech text.
