|
The symbiosis of digital media and literature has not merely ushered in the era and phenomenon of e-books and e-readers. Since the second half of the 20th century, the coexistence of poetry, prose and digital technologies has also given rise to a distinct field of electronic or digital literature, one that is highly diverse in both genre and form. The elective seminar 'Digital Literature and E-books' will offer students an introduction to this specific literary field, which is developing primarily beyond the borders of the Czech-Slovak region. Attention will be paid both to the theoretical concepts necessary for understanding the nature of digital literature and to specific forms of digital literature, including the reading and interpretation of selected works. Students will explore the possibilities of incorporating new and digital media into literary works from the 1920s to the present day, both within the Czech-Slovak region and (primarily) abroad. They will explore the specific aesthetics of works of digital literature and discover how digital technologies are transforming the reading process and the reader's experience, the role of the reader in the perception of a digital literary work, and how digital literature, thanks to technology, is entering unconventional and new contexts. Given the limited amount of primary and secondary literature available in the Czech language, reading English-language studies, chapters and works will also form an essential part of the seminar.
