Course content
|
The course is divided into six tutorials covering the following topics: The Development of Writing - the influence of ancient scripts on calligraphy; current issues related to writing; codices up to the invention of printing and manuscripts from the late fifteenth century: the development of the form of the book and its constituent parts, bindings; the development of initials and illumination in manuscripts up to the end of the fifteenth century. The Renaissance Printed Book - typical features; the first printing and publishing schools and key figures influencing the appearance of the book from the late fifteenth to the end of the sixteenth century. The Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical Book - typical features; printing and publishing schools and key figures influencing the appearance of the book from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. Institutions of the Book Trade from the Sixteenth to the Early Twentieth Century - publishers, booksellers, libraries, distribution. The Development of Book Illustration - the development of ex libris, changes in book graphics and design; bibliophilia; the artist's book. Reading Culture - reading societies, literary cafés, modes of reading; research into and regulation of reading in the twentieth century. Censorship as an Intervention in Literary Communication - communication models of censorship (historical forms of censorship, especially religious censorship, censorship directed against popular or lowbrow literature, and the censorship system in totalitarian Czechoslovakia).

Learning outcomes
|
The course is conceived as a theoretical and historical introduction to the history of book production, ranging from ancient written culture to the electronic book. Particular attention is paid to the graphic and technical design of books, the development of book design and its interaction with the textual meanings of book "contents," as well as to historical changes in the perception of the book as a medium of communication on the one hand and as an artefact on the other. The phenomenon of the "book" is examined, among other approaches, from the perspectives of the sociology of literature, cultural studies, book studies, and related fields. Teaching combines lectures by the instructor, student presentations based on assigned topics, guided discussion, and practical exercises aimed at consolidating acquired knowledge.
The students will gain knowledge of the history of book production, the development of book design (and its relation to the text), and the changes in the two ways of understanding the book: as a means of communication and as an artifact. They will also learn the basic ideas from various fields concerning books: the cultural studies, the book studies, the sociology of literature, the book reception, the book market, the book culture etc.
